ENGL 1A - I-Search

This guide provides guidance and resources for Prof. A. Henderson's I-Search assignment.

broad to narrowWe often start with a general idea. Learning more about that broad topic can help us to

  • identify a more specific focus,

  • become familiar with the terminology of that field, and

  • start a list of keywords we can use to search for detailed information.

Keep in mind

Reference materials are a great way to get an overview of your topic and to find specific definitions.

Reference materials include:

  • dictionaries

  • encyclopedias

  • directories

  • biographical sources

  • geographical sources

  • ready reference sources

When using these sources, start with the index (often in the last volume if the material is a multi-volume set). You can also try the table of contents or the appropriate volume for your subject's name if the resource is arranged alphabetically. Take advantage of the "see also" references that connect entries on related topics and the list of sources for each entry.
