How to format hanging indents in Google Docs and in Word for use in your citation lists.

Creating Hanging Indents in Microsoft Word

The following instructions are applicable for those using the free MS Word software accessible through your Peralta Canvas Solutions/Portal.

Create your citation:

Type out your citation in the appropriate APA or MLA format. Note that the example below will be in MLA.

Go into the Layout Menu:

Select/Highlight your citation (tip: you may format multiple citations at once!) and then select the 'Layout' Menu. Find the 'Paragraph' Menu (which may be hidden under the 3 dot 'more' menu) and select 'Paragraph Options.'

Depending on the version of Microsoft Word you are using, you may also find the 'Paragraph' menu by selecting 'Layout' and then selecting the 'More' arrow box near 'Indent' and 'Spacing' information.

Alternatively, you may also get into 'Paragraph' options by highlighting your citation and then right clicking and selecting 'Paragraph Options' or 'Paragraph' (depending on your version of Word).

In the Paragraph Options Menu:

Find the 'Indention' options, Select 'Special' and then select 'Hanging' from the list. Select the 'OK' button.
